Does it Cause Complete Loss of Vision?

Breakdown of the macula cells causes loss of sight in the central part of the field of vision. Complete loss of vision does not occur as the side (peripheral) vision remains unaffected. Therefore you are still able to use your peripheral vision to to carry out your day to day activities but this can be extremely difficult to get used to.

Worst case scenario is a black hole in the middle of your vision and only able see to around this balck hole, this is a very physically limiting condition. Having regular eye tests can help prevent macular degeneration or at least slow it’s effect once it has been diagmosed.

Late stage AMD is a very frustrating time as this condition will now affect day to day life causing difficulty in writing, driving and recognising facial features as central vision is significantly effected. As a reasonable amount of peripheral vision remains, people can still maintain their own life without too much external aid.

What is ‘Wet’ AMD? | Cause of Wet AMD

Wet is less common in Age Related Macular Degeneration. It occurs when small, new, abnormal blood vessels begin to grow behind the retina towards the macular. These tiny vessels leak blood and fluid, damaging the macular surface. Wet AMD cause a rapid loss of central vision. Urgent assessment should be sought from a macular specialist if signs & symptoms are found. Book Your Eye Test Today
