A stroke affecting the right side of the brain can cause problems in vision. Some may state that they are have double vision, blurred vision or partial vision loss. The eye is still receiving the light and converting the light into electrical impulses to be sent through the optic nerve. During an eye exam the optometrist will shine light in to the eye to check whether any part of the back of the eye is damaged.

The final process for the brain is to convert the electrical impulses, the pathways are affected causing images to be either distorted or altogether lost, this is called “Visual Neglect”. This can cause problems in depth perception and movement. Book an eye test now to catch any problems early.

Does it Cause Complete Loss of Vision?

Breakdown of the macula cells causes loss of sight in the central part of the field of vision. Complete loss of vision does not occur as the side (peripheral) vision remains unaffected. Therefore you are still able to use your peripheral vision to to carry out your day to day activities but this can be extremely difficult to get used to.

Worst case scenario is a black hole in the middle of your vision and only able see to around this balck hole, this is a very physically limiting condition. Having regular eye tests can help prevent macular degeneration or at least slow it’s effect once it has been diagmosed.
